When Tragedy Hits
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” – Desmond Tutu
While flipping through my Facebook feed, I was shocked to see a former classmate’s world had crumbled apart. Several friends had shared a GoFundMe page to help the Monaco family. I clicked on the link, and I was sorry to learn the family had lost their home and belongings in a fire.
I wanted to learn more, so I visited Courtney’s Facebook page and ran a Google search. I read a local newspaper’s coverage of the family’s tragedy, and I visited the GoFundMe page the Monacos’ friends had created. I left a small donation, and I wondered if others would also support the Monaco family in their time of need. The donation goal was listed as $5,000. I hoped they would exceed this number.
I checked back, and I was happy to see so many people had come together to help the family in their time of need. Within 14 hours, the page has been shared more than 350 times, and nearly $25,000 has been raised by more than 235 people. According to Courtney’s friends, who posted on her Facebook page, the family is still trying to figure out where to live and what their needs are as they navigate through this challenging time. I hope they continue to receive support from their community as they begin to re-build their lives.
