Louie & Ernie’s Pizza, Bronx, New York
“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” – James Beard
I love pizza. I wish I didn’t, but I do. As I have a gluten and wheat sensitivity, I avoid these ingredients. But, when John asked me if I wanted to stop at the best pizza place in New York, I had to give into my temptation.
We had a meeting in the Bronx, which was right down the street from Ernie & Louie’s. John asked me if I had ever been there. Although I had driven down that road so many times, I never noticed the pizza joint in an old house. John definitely piqued my curiosity.
I felt like I stepped back in time to an era where merchants treated their customers like family. The place was small and homey. We ordered a half cheese, half sausage pizza and drinks.
We picked a table, and the folks next to us stared talking to us. Louie and Ernie’s was just that kind of place. The son lived in New York, and his parents were visiting. They told us about their adventures in the city.
Our pizza arrived, and I savored every mouthful. John was right in his recommendation; the pizza was damn good. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful, the crust was cooked to perfection, and the sausage was a mouth-watering delight.
When we finished, we paid with cash, as that is all they accept. We got an old school receipt, and a warm farewell.
I would highly recommend Louie & Ernie’s, a fabulous pizza place tucked away in an old house in the Bronx. If you are ever in the area, stop on in. You will be happy you did.
