A Christmas Carol at the North Shore Musical Theatre

“What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future.” Agnes M. Pahro

Last night, my family and I attended A Christmas Carol at the North Shore Musical Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts. When my mom asked who wanted to go, I said, “yes,” as I love plays and theater. I also like to spend time with my mom, when she is available.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of seeing Hamilton in San Francisco and Aladdin on Broadway in New York City. Last year, I took my niece to see Cirque Du Soleil’s Luzia. I have been fortunate to see some of the best shows out there, and more frequently than most. I am thankful for that.

Before heading to the theater, we grabbed a quick dinner at Rev Kitchen & Bar in Beverly. When in the area, we tend to eat there. They offer a fantastic gluten-free menu, and some of my family members are gluten-free. A few of my favorite dishes include their regular chicken wings and shaved sprouts.

After dinner, we headed to the show. I could not believe how cute the theater was. It was small, intimate, and round. The circular layout reminded me of Cirque Du Soleil tents.

I had not seen a Christmas show in ages, and the story-line of A Christmas Carol was buried deep within my childhood. I was not really sure what to expect. I sat back, and let the show unfold before my eyes.

The play exceeded my expectations. We were transported back in time to the days of Ebenezer Scrooge, a wealthy, stingy, Christmas-loathing man. We joined Scrooge on his journey of self discovery with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. We saw Scrooge transform from a young, innocent boy, to a man who chose money over love, to a lonely, bitter man, to a giving soul. Can you relate? Through Scrooge’s journey, we were reminded of the true spirit of Christmas.

The show was definitely a highlight for me this holiday season. I was surprised how a little theater in the North Shore could captivate me just as much, if not more so, as the fancy theaters in the big cities. The actors, special effects, and music were fantastic, and drew me into the performance. The intimacy of the theater allowed the story to hit home, and at some points, my eyes were wet with tears. I was reminded of what is most important in life.

I plan on checking out more shows at this venue. If you are looking for a fun activity this holiday season, I highly recommend this play.
