What is HubWeek?

I always wanted to attend HubWeek, a fall festival in Boston, Massachusetts. HubWeek was created by The Boston Globe, Harvard University, MIT, and Massachusetts General Hospital in 2014. HubWeek features innovative thought leaders in art, science, and technology, who are building a better future.

Dance. Dance. Dance.

My first year at HubWeek, I experienced their silent disco. I was unsure of what to expect. When Carlyn and I entered the room, we were given a pair of headphones. We could dance to the same tunes or choose our own beat. Three of Boston’s top DJs played, and the color of our headphones indicated who were were dancing to. Goose bumps tickled my arms, as I emerged myself into this new adventure.

Carlyn and I frequently checked out each other’s headphones, to sync up. Other times, we let the vibrations of the music float our souls. We could experience the silent disco together or solo. Dancing to my own beat, in public, was unique and unexpected.

People watching

Interacting with others was different than what I remember from my youth. People were immersed into their own experience and groups, instead of gravitating to new folks. My curious eyes bore into the young ones. Their eyes were shut; their heads were bobbing; and their mouths spilled a myriad of different lyrics no one heard. They appeared connected to the music, but disconnected from each other. This was an interesting concept, which technology has helped to shape.

We met this one millennial, who was there alone. He glided through the room with an air of confidence. His cool attitude fascinated me. We chatted him up, as our curiosity was like a bubble ready to pop. I could not wrap my mind around the concept of venturing out solo to dance by myself, at his age. I would have felt like a thousand eyes were piercing me, sculpting the word “loser” into my skin. His cool vibe was unnerving and interesting.

Try something new

The silent disco was a fun experience and a fascinating way to immerse ourselves into music, technology, and the millennial culture. Silent discos give you the freedom to express yourself and enjoy the music, without sweaty strangers dripping their bodily fluids all over you. On the flip side, I left filled with gratitude to have lived in an era where human interaction took precedence over technology.

If you have never grooved to your own beat, shatter your comfort zone at HubWeek’s silent disco. Enjoy the roller coaster of life.
