Awkward Dance Moves

Have you ever been salsa dancing? One of my really good friends from high school used to teach it. When I was younger, she dragged me salsa dancing a few times. I fumbled through the moves, before watching from the sidelines as experts glided across the floor.

Fast forward to this past summer. One of my dates proposed salsa dancing at Havana Club. I happened to be out with this high school friend, when I received the message. I am sure my face went white, even though I responded ‘sounds fun.’ His date idea was definitely creative.

I love trying new things and pushing my limits. However, I do not like looking foolish. Especially when I found this guy to be kind, attractive, intelligent, exciting, and someone with similar interests. I did not know him yet, but I was intrigued.

My friend assumed he must be a salsa dancer if he was taking me dancing. She offered to teach me the basics. One night, I went over to her place. After watching her sashay her hips, I felt more discouraged. I had to remind myself that if he judged me for my sloppy dance moves, he was not the man for me.

Cocktails at Brick & Mortar

When our date night arrived, we met at Brick & Mortar. Before heading to Havana Club, we chatted over cocktails.

Brick & Mortar was a really cool venue with delicious, unique cocktails. The building was hidden. I happened to ask the bouncer where the place was. He responded, “You’re here.” My date had sent me to a concealed cocktail spot, adding a sense of mystery. I did not want to leave, as we were having so much fun. However, he escorted me out in a timely fashion. Our salsa class was about to begin.

Dance. Dance. Dance.

On Friday nights, Havana Club offers salsa classes at 9:00 p.m. Before our class began, I asked him if he was a salsa dancer. He informed me he had recently salsa danced at a conference in DC for the first time. He thought it was fun. I let out a sigh of relief, and a smile danced upon my lips.

Havana Club is a great date place. They have instructors up on stage, who guide you through beginner’s dance moves. They move slow enough for you to learn, but fast enough to keep the lessons fun. After a series of salsa steps, they added music. We were finally ready to show off our salsa moves.

We laughed. We danced. We had a lot of fun. Thanks to my mysterious, creative date, I discovered I actually enjoy salsa dancing.

Tip: Salsa dancing is a unique, fun activity to do on a date night. I highly recommend this place.
